A majority of homeowners love a green and lush lawn and take pride in their landscaping. Achieving a luxurious lawn is not as easy as it sounds. If you have the space in your property for a lawn, check out the following tips for planting grass and developing your yard. The project will require some preparation including preparing the soil, getting the right seeds, finding the right time, and some hard work. But, the end results of a lush and luxurious lawn will make the work and time all worth it.

Important Tips for Planting Grass

The Right Time to Soil and Seed

The best time for planting grass is in the spring or early fall. The weather in these months is kind to your new grass, and less harsh than planting during the heat of the summer or the cold in the winter. We still recommend asking lawn care experts like Summit Turf Services about timing and seeding.

Another important part of seeding is to have your soil tested so that you can add any nutrients that are missing. You can test the soil yourself with a soil test kit. Most grass types will thrive in soil that has a pH value between 6.0 and 7.0. pH under 6.0 means that your soil is acidic and can be revived with the addition of limestone to your soil. pH over 7.0 can mean your soil is alkaline. The addition of compost, sulfur, or composted manure can set things right. Testing your soil pH is an important aspect of gardening and farming and planting grass is no exception.

You will then need to prepare your soil for planting grass seeds. Remove large rocks and debris, work it over with a tiller, fill up the low spots, and break the soil down until all particles are marble-sized. Existing grass or weeds should be removed. Make the surface even with a rake, and your lawn area is now ready for seeding.

Remember, when you are buying seed, make sure the type of seed suits your growing conditions. You can research the best type of seed on the Internet or just ask the lawn care experts of Summit Turf Services. Are you going to use the lawn a lot? Do you have children and pets? Do you get sunshine on your lawn or is it mostly in the shade? All of these questions are important to ask when you’re preparing to plant grass.

Seeding Your Lawn

Your preparation of the soil should have your lawn area dug up and loosened up to a depth of 3″. See that it is properly graded and sloped in the direction where you want excess water to flow. Once this is done, add compost or fertilizer to the soil and work it into the soil.

Your seed packets will indicate the rate at which your seeds need to be used in a given area. Spread the grass seed at the rate suggested. Your lawn will be evenly covered if you do your sowing in two directions so that you get a crisscross pattern. If you are not confident of doing this evenly, get hold of a lawn spreader. It is a simple mechanism that will evenly spread the grass seed, as you move it across your lawn area.

Once the seed has been spread, cover the seeds with a small amount of soil, using a rake. Add mulch to the lawn so that the seed does not get blown away. Start watering the seed but see that you do not saturate the seeds. In the first stages of planting grass, water frequently. Keep an eye on the grass and when the grass grows to about an inch, then cut the watering back to once a day.

Once your lawn has grown to 2 1/2″ or 3″, it’s time to decide on a watering schedule. Summit Turf Services recommends giving your lawn about an inch of water every week.

Reinvigorating Your Lawn And Overseeding

Lawns can look weak and thin after time and usage, and you may need to take steps to get them back to their original lush green state. If certain areas look thin, you can spread grass seed over them and thicken up these areas. Over time, grass can grow old and may need to be replaced. The most inexpensive way of doing this is to resort to overseeding. The alternative would be to dig up the lawn completely and start your planting grass operations all over again.

Before you start the process of overseeding, mow the lawn shorter than you normally do, and collect the clippings. Rake the lawn to loosen the topmost layer of soil. The new seed will then have easy access to the soil so that it can put down roots easily. Get the same seed as you had used before. Rake in a thin 0.25″ of enriched soil to help the seed to hold on to. Spread the seed with your spreader, or by hand. Spread the collected clippings or/and, compost manure over the overseeded area, and then take care to ensure that soil remains moist by lightly watering it once or twice a day. Do this until the seedlings have the same height as your existing lawn.

Watering and Maintaining a Lawn

Watering a lawn is best done in the early morning when there is no wind and temperatures are low so that less evaporation occurs. However, if you think that your lawn is stressed, water it when you can. Irregular watering of lawns without following a schedule will help the lawn to be more drought-resistant, as it follows weather patterns. Water deeply because light and shallow watering will cause the water to evaporate before it has time to reach the roots where it is needed.

Remove any lawn thatch that has grown as this can affect the soil’s capacity to absorb water. You can also aerate the soil occasionally to improve the soil’s absorption capacity.

planting grass and watering regularly

A good lawn requires to be cut and mowed regularly. Choose a mower that is easy for you to use. Mowers can be manual or mechanical ones that use electricity or gas engines. Limit your mowing to one-third of the grass length in a single mowing. The right size to which your grass should be mowed depends on the type of grass, and their recommended mowing height. Start mowing once the grass is an inch more than this height.
