Lawn Mowing Patterns – Tips, Tricks, and Hacks
This article discusses the advantages of changing your lawn mowing pattern and how to choose a good one. It also discusses the influences of the angle from which the grass is mowed and the time of day.
A mowing pattern in your lawn may appear elaborate and unneeded. Still, each time you mow the grass, you are building a pattern. Therefore, regularly changing the lawn mowing pattern is beneficial to the lawn and aesthetically pleasing.
The Advantages of Modifying Ones Lawn Mowing Design
The weight of your lawn mower causes the soil to compact where the mower’s tires meet the ground as you mow the lawn. You can minimize stress on the lawn by cutting in a way that the tires go on a new track every time.
Mowing your lawn, in the exact manner, also wears away the turf in the wheel tracks. This results in bare patches where weeds can quickly develop. In addition, because fresh grass does not grow very good in dirt that is compacted, reseeding certain areas has limited success.
How to Choose a Pattern
Choosing a pattern depends on how much time and effort you want to put into your lawn care. Whether you keep to the fundamentals by changing your mowing design or you develop one that provides the grass a groomed look, making your lawn amazing and the rest in the neighborhood jealous.
Some grass-cutting patterns can attract attention inwards and highlight a main focal point, like the home.
Lawn Mowing Pattern Influencers
The pattern’s appearance is heavily influenced by the angle in which it is seen. For example, grass blades leaning away from you appear lighter because the surface of the grass blade that is catching the light is bigger. Still, those leaning towards you appear darker in color due to the surface of the blade reflecting light is much smaller.
Regardless of the viewer’s viewpoint, cutting your lawn in a negative pattern by reversing the stripes’ orientation gives the most contrasted appearance. The intensity of the pattern is affected by sun exposure so it will appear different throughout the day.Â
Your mower’s length of the cut also influences the strength of the grass stripes. Shorter blades of grass bend less, resulting in less light reflecting than on blades of grass that are longer. As a result, striping is much more visible when the grass is mowed 3 to 3.5 inches rather than the minimum height of 2 to 2.5 inches.
To emphasize the stripes, a lawn striper or a lawn roller can be used to help bend the turf in the same way professionals at lawn care businesses do to give your lawn a well manicured look.
Not all types of grasses lend themselves equally to mowing patterns or designs. The further a grass can bend, the more visually appealing the pattern. Striping is often less visible in warm-season lawns due to them being stiffer and flex less than that of cold-season lawns.
Take note of any grass clippings left behind from your mower. A dense buildup of grass cuttings can obstruct the aesthetic impact of the striping and can suffocate your grass. Therefore ensure that any clippings that remain are scattered uniformly throughout the lawn.
Typical Lawn Mowing Designs
Unless directly specified, it is ideal for mowing twice or three times around the edge of your lawn to produce a tidy border that may be used for turning and as a sight guide.
Be sure to overlap the rows or stripes to prevent your lawn mower from compacting the soil on the same track.
Whatever pattern you choose, remember that mowing at regular speed results in more similar lines.
Circle
A circular design can be started from the outside or the inside. Starting on the exterior is preferable for lawns that lack focus points. You may even start inside and work your way out if you have a large tree or other focal point.
It is critical to begin this pattern slowly, regardless of where you begin. Overlapping your mower’s tire tracks is especially crucial during circle patterns since the tires form a broader track.
Concentric Circle
Regarding lawn mowing pattern ideas, circles are a simple and effective mowing method since they reduce the 180-degree rotations required when mowing lines. Start at the perimeter of your lawn and travel in circles until you reach the center, or mow a ring around a tree and keep mowing wider circles until you run out of lawn!
Checkerboard
The checkerboard pattern is the perfect pattern if your goal is to provide the same look as you see on a baseball field. The effect of a checkerboard pattern is caused by the blades of grass bending in opposing directions and reflecting light, making them appear darker and brighter.
Mow the grass in straight rows in one direction, then mow it again at a 90-degree angle the first time. Then, mow the entire area again upon finishing to eliminate any irregularities from your pattern to give the grass a tidy appearance.
Crisscross or Diamond
Contrary to a checkerboard pattern, which involves mowing your lawn at a 90-degree angle twice, on a crisscross pattern the second cutting is completed diagonally, at a 45-degree angle. Being in the middle of the grass and cut the lawn in its entirety one direction initially, then at a diagonal angle on the following pass to produce a diamond look.
Curves
Smooth waves are similar to stripes, but they have a beautiful curving pattern instead of running straight. As a guide, follow the first wave. When you reach the edge, perform a 180-degree turn and go in the opposite direction. Maintain regular turn patterns over the whole grass.
Stripes
This is the most basic lawn mowing pattern and the one to use when you need to get the job done quickly.
Mow in straight lines to prevent sudden bends. You may switch up the pattern. It doesn’t always have to be perpendicular. You can alternatively mow stripes diagonal to your house or another focal point on your land.
Varying Lines
This pattern is made by mowing two parallel rows in the same direction and a third in the opposite way. Continue the pattern once you’ve completed the first three rows. After that, you might have to go back and forth on the same row.
When you leave the grass clippings remaining, the lines become more pronounced, which is a beautiful thing to do in any design since it feeds nutrients back to the soil.
Zig-Zags
Begin at the edge of your grass and work your way in one direction to create a zig-zag pattern. Then make a 180-degree spin and repeat the sequence. Again, the light’s reflection will help to emphasize the lawn mowing pattern.
